The Beginning

In 1991, Nathan Garlick commenced his apprenticeship as a Pastry Chef at a family owned  pie shop in the South Eastern suburbs of Sydney. Nathan mastered his craft, and in December 2000 joined forces with father Terry who was retiring from a lifetime on the waterfront and brother Sean who just wound up a rugby league career with the Rabbitohs and the Roosters.

This caricature of Terry (in his work overalls after retiring from the waterfront), Sean (in his South Sydney football Jersey), Nathan Garlick (in his pastry chef hat & jacket) was appropriated from the original caricature drawn by Frank Puletua following the 2001 Pie Eating Competition.

Using the nickname of their Surname “Garlo”, the first store was opened on Anzac Parade Maroubra Junction in March 2001.

Sean made the most of the mates he had built up throughout his Rugby League career and staged a Grand Opening which was shown live on Channel Nine’s “The Footy Show.” It would be a Celebrity Pie Eating Competition. Legend pie eater, Artie Beetson was joined by some of Rugby Leagues biggest names (and biggest frames) including Mark Carroll, Mark Geyer, Craig Salvatori and Daryl Brohman. The event and the store received widespread media exposure and Garlo’s Pies Maroubra became an instant success.

In April 2002, Garlo’s Pies Mascot was born. The Head Office and all baking was transferred to the 150 sq. metre site, and The Footy Show was back to telecast the opening again via a “State of Origin Celebrity Pie Eating Contest.  The Mascot store also became a great success.

A further 5 stores were opened over the next 24 months (Parramatta, Coogee, Blacktown, Randwick and Marrickville) which forced the Garlick family to purchase their first central bakery, so all production moved from the back of the Mascot shop to a 250 sq. metre baking facility at Burrows Rd. St Peters.

Garlo’s Pies growth continued to soar with the opening of another 5 stores over the next 3 years (Enmore, Bondi, Liverpool, Eastgardens and Manly) and the expansion of their wholesale customer base to over 200 Hotels, Café’s, Schools, Clubs, Mobile Lunch Trucks and Sports Grounds.

In 2009 a Coles boss wanting a truly local NSW pie walked into the office and asked us if they wanted to supply to Coles.  After initial hesitation a trial began with a few Sydney stores and by mid-2010 the family business was supplying to 200 Coles stores across NSW.

Garlo’s went from supplying by the box to supplying by the pallet although at the time a standard pallet couldn’t even fit through the doorways of the facility.

By 2013 every square inch of the facility was being used and they were producing around the clock.  The decision was made to take the lease of a rundown warehouse in Woodley St. St. Peters, only a kilometre away and turn it into a state of the art food manufacturing facility which was capable of export accreditation.

The family scraped together all they could and upgraded the 1250 sq. m warehouse and office and signed onto a 15 year lease.  All of a sudden opportunities to supply the likes of Virgin Airlines, Qantas, Aldi and an export deal with a supermarket in the UAE were part of the day to day supply agreements.

With retail shop rents in Sydney continuing to rise alongside wages, a decision was made to not renew the Garlo’s Pie Shop leases as they came up for renewal and instead concentrate on the manufacture and supply of our products to the food service, supermarket and export markets.

But only 18 months into making great use of this new facility, the NSW Government knocked on the door and advised they would be compulsorily acquiring the property for the purposes of the WestConnex Road Project.

The bold decision was made to purchase a Calendar Printing building at 5-7 Garema Circ. Kingsgrove.  Here was the chance to build a facility for the future.  This gave the Garlo’s business the opportunity to access over 5,700 sq. m of usable space…a fair step up from the 1250 sq. m from St. Peters.

The business moved into Kingsgrove in September 2016 and went from being able to store 40 pallets on site to 400 pallets.

Being Rabbitohs supporters, It was a different feel being based in the heart of Canterbury Bulldogs territory, but a welcomed relief to the hustle and bustle of congested St. Peters.

Garlo’s started supplying the likes of Costco, Aldi and Woolworths but also took on contract manufacturing work for other brands.  Suddenly opportunities opened to produce pizzas, quiche and pastry shells which are supplied to other businesses.  Garlo’s was no longer just a pie maker, but a food manufacturer who has the capacity to make foods of all kinds with accreditations such as Halal, Kosher, Vegan and Export to meet the needs of customers both in Australia and around the world.

Family

An all Australian owned and operated family business, Garlo’s Pies has 8 direct family members working in the business.
